Voltaire's Candide Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words

Voltaire's Candide - Essay Example Female characters have been shown inhumanly beaten, molested, raped, enslaved and sold again and again from one hand to another. Although, Voltaire was popular for having vocally favored and propagated the equal rights of women, yet, this feeling is not noticeably perceptible in Candide, particularly taking into consideration the reality that the major female characters are negatively portrayed as prostitutes, lustful women that marry for wealth, infected disease-carriers, and most prominently victims. In general, while Voltaire’s effort was definitely seditious and critical of society, any prospective revolutionary value lies only within the sagacity that it uncovered weaknesses in the prevailing communal configuration. Female Characters; Evolution of Sufferings Throughout the novella, its female characters have endured numerous challenges and undergone extreme sufferings, which have made it tremendously difficult for Candide to continue to believe Pangloss's philosophy. Huma ns are either destined to live in misery or in the lethargy of boredom. This is ridiculing and is brought about by the famous saying, "All is for the best in the best of all possible worlds". And in no way are we meant to be receiving Pangloss as a believable character; like Candide he is over exaggerated and distorted to the extent that his philosophy is almost inseparable from his character. One finds that Pangloss is a recurring nightmare of Candide in the way that he constantly returns from moments of almost certain peril alive, and therefore re-ignites the morsels of optimism that Candide still contains. Pangloss maintains that this is the best of all possible worlds, when really they are living in a cave, cut off from the suffering that still rages in the outside world. The Writer’s Purpose of Specific Depiction of Female Characters One must assume that his main purpose throughout the novella is that he provides a hole through which Voltaire can attack the optimists, bu t underlyingly to keep the story alive in the way that Candide still maintains faith and optimism that all will turn out well in the end. The significance of the Eldorado episode is to provide a frame of reference from which to compare Europe. Voltaire uses Eldorado rhetorically to contrast vices of the real world. What he is really doing is enforcing the fact that Europe is full of evil, sarcastically saying, "If you hadn’t noticed yet this is how bad Europe is," compared with somewhere in South America. But the Eldorado episode brings Candide riches, and this is a chance for Voltaire to put Candide up on a pedestal and then bring him right down again, and lower. Candide loses all his money and realizes that it just makes him a target for all sorts of swindlers, like the Vanderdendur and the Surinamese officers who try and get as much money from Candide as possible. Eldoardo is Voltaire’s paradise, his ideal world, it is void of religion and rules, it is educational, and practical, and the people there are friendly. His financial injury inspires more pessimism in him than violence ever did. This crushing of Candide through the removal of his riches lets Voltaire really point out the power of greed in man and he thoroughly ridicules the irrationality of human priorities. But one must also understand how Eldorado shows how insignificant and valueless something can be if there it exists in large quantities. So one would argue that the

Ethics and Legal Environment, Business Association and Torts, Critical Assignment

Ethics and Legal Environment, Business Association and Torts, Critical Thinking - Assignment Example The negative publicity can affect the firms' performance in the market and Gabe’s tenure might also cause dissension within the organization itself, especially among the shareholders who are intent on making a profit. To decide on this matter, Badaracco impresses on the decision maker to judge responsibly. Ultimately, he proposes the evaluation of the interests of all the stakeholders involved. The idea is to determine the benefit so that the decision will achieve "the most good and the least harm" (p.5). The entire list that should be evaluated to determine the net benefit can be constituted by the entire organization. This variable is representative of the shareholders, the employees and Garry, himself, as the owner. Such evaluation, however, is complicated by the fact that a dismissal may have a mixed impact internally. For instance, the organization may benefit from it as it could achieve favorable market perception. However, the organization could also suffer from being kept out of a beneficial chairmanship. To resolve this, one could try looking at specific details of the case. An outline of these relevant facts can reveal the best possible benefit for the organization. First, there is the fact that Gabe is not only a productive leader but he also excels in forging relationships. He has great people skills, a trait that helped him earn the chairmanship in the first place. It follows, therefore, that he has excellent relations with both employees and shareholders alike. He must, therefore, be well regarded among these stakeholders. Calls for his dismissal, hence, may not be strong within the firm. It is also helpful to consider several mitigating circumstances. There is Gabe’s work for the community and his causes. In addition, there is the motivation behind the exposure of Gabe's criminal record. Skeeter had malicious intent in leaking Gabe's story to the media.

Poetry Analysis Essay Example for Free

Poetry Analysis Essay Six Galician Poems by Federico Lorca (Madrigal for the City of Santiago, Ballad of Our Lady of the Boat, and Song of the Shop Boy) Lisability: Camellia-any of several shrubs of the genus Camellia, especially C. japonica, native to Asia, having glossy evergreen leaves and white, pink, red, or variegated roselike flowers. Veiled-not openly or directly expressed; masked; disguised; hidden; obscure: a veiled threat. Languishing-to be or become weak or feeble; droop; fade. Pampa-the vast grassy plains of southern South America, especially in Argentina. Nostalgia-a wistful desire to return in thought or in fact to a former time in ones life, to ones home or homeland, or to ones family and friends; a sentimental yearning for the happiness of a former place or time: a nostalgia for his college days. Story-The story is about Federico leaving his hometown of Madrid and going to Santiago. He arrives in Santiago Argentina, because several words he uses and other objects he describes are only found in Argentina. Lorca is in Santiago and it is constantly raining, it is raining at night and in the morning. If he is not writing about rain, it’s the ocean or some other form of water. While wondering the city he encounters a statue or painting of the Virgin Mary. He then travels to the capital of Argentina , Buenos Aires. He says the wind sounds like bagpipes. Ramon de Sismundi owns a shops and he seems to be unhappy throughout the whole poem. Meaning – Rain symbolizes a lot of things especially in poetry where there is not a real meaning. The rain Lorca rights about is cleansing him, starting a new life. All of the difficulties he had in Spain and America are now behind him, it is time for him to move on and start a new beginning. Many people are always stuck in the past, but he is not going to be like them, he is going to move forward and make progress. He also writes a whole poem about Our Lady of the Boat (Virgin Mary). She also represents various meanings, but in this poem he is most likely talking about pureness. A double emphasis since water is also pure. Also he may be trying to tell us that if it wasn’t for his strong faith in the Virgin Mary, he wouldn’t have the chance to move forward. He tends to write about nature, but the otherness of it. He talks about wind, which more than often symbolizes a certain type of force or energy. In Santiago the wind is damp and gray. Ramon is cleaning his shop, and dreaming but this man is still unhappy. He does not find the bagpipe winds of Buenos Aires, people that have positive and happy attitudes find great things about the city and move on, people who are depressed and unhappy such as Ramon do not get nowhere. Maybe Ramon is unhappy because he knows he is going to die, and it is sooner than he thinks. Lorca always seems to be expressing his inner emotions and feelings. Even though this place is great, there is no place better than home. Technique-Lorca is very big on imagery. Almost every single line contains imagery. He really tries to get the reader in the spot that he is at. Lines such as Trembles in my heart, and came the misty dead. He uses imagery to emphasize the meaning. Often, the intention of Lorca is to change the way readers see the world. Especially with Lorca’s themes, some of which include: awareness of death, our limitations, isolation and nature. He uses a lot of diction which is choosing certain words to emphasize something else, whether it is emphasizing the meaning or imagery. He also does not give no direct meaning. Mo or Pomo- Lorca is definitely a modernist poet. Not only in the pom but also in real life. He stuggles with the fact that he is homosexual and many people do not accept him, placing himself on the lower part of the hierarchy. Even though he is low on the hierarchy is doesn’t prevent him from making progress and moving on, leave everything else behind. These poems are modernist simply because of their appearance, they are very structured and have the same number of lines in each stanza, very formal.

Internet Appliances Have Arrived :: Essays Papers

Internet Appliances Have Arrived This article was about a new kind of devices referred to as â€Å"Internet Appliances†. These devices look like small PCs but they only come with the online essentials: a screen, a keyboard, a modem, and a browser (no hard disk or floppy drive). These devices are directed at consumers who are interested in only using the Internet. Three devices were tested and described: Microsoft Network Companions from Compaq and Vestel, and the New Internet Computer (NIC). The two Microsoft Network units were very similar in design. They both have an embedded mouse and keyboards with short cut keys. A bad point of these machines is that they only function with Microsoft Network as the Internet service provider, which can result in a large amount of money as an overall investment. As far as price is concerned, the Vestel unit did not have a set price at the time of publication while the Compaq retails at $599.00. Up to $400.00 of that amount is available for Microsoft Network rebate. The rebate amount varies with the length of the contract. Overall both machines should be sufficient for first time Internet users. The third device, â€Å"The New Internet Computer† (NIC) is the opposite of the Microsoft network machines. NIC is the most computer-like of the three appliances. Included with the device is a small vertical case, two stand-alone speakers, a tabletop mouse with a mouse pad, and a full size keyboard without shortcut buttons. The price for the NIC is a modest $200.00 plus $130.00 for the 15† monitor. NetZero is one of the unit’s default Internet service provider options.

Warehouse Management System

In a WMS, we aim to observe the maximized profits with a minimized cost with certain computerized procedures to enable a seamless process of warehouse operation. With the above consideration, we come up with 4 main special features that are essential to be equipped in the WMS. First of all, we need to have barcode labeling for all the stocks in the warehouse in order to identify each product, keep record in the system and find them out easily. It is necessary for us to have detailed information of every stock in the warehouse by simply identifying the barcode labels with wireless inventory scanner, which could save time, reduce paper work and greatly increase the productivity and accuracy when handling stocks. Barcode labeling is fundamental for WMS as we need to keep tracking the stocks throughout the whole warehouse operation process. Secondly, we think that efficiency is also an undeniable element in WMS, which we consider auto-conveyer as one of our choice of special features to e nhance the efficiency.Auto-conveyor could reduce the need of man power and it is much speedy than the manually controlled way when moving stocks as it could quickly retrieve wanted items. Auto conveyor could also handle some simple sorting and identification work, which greatly reduce the need of manpower. Thirdly, virtual warehouse would be our core feature in the WMS, it acts as an important role in both order management and put away and packing. It provides a comprehensive physical view of the warehouse. With a virtual warehouse, we could have a clear idea of the operating warehouse through the browser. It could facilitate the decision making in the WMS as we could control a lot of process with a virtual warehouse. Indeed, a virtual warehouse is a system that involved a lot of components, but we are now focusing on the order management and the put away and picking management. With WMS, orders could be generated easily on the internet as the information of customers, suppliers and the stocks are kept in the system. It is convenient to add items, notes and select the customer or supplier for your purchase or sales order. This may improve the efficiency and is environmentally friendly when compared with the paper file. It is much less time-consuming to find out the order and customer information. For the put away management, the WMS could utilize the optimum locations for the stocks received in the warehouse automatically. Also in the picking management, the WMS could decide the best location for picking. With this system, we do not have to waste time on finding storage location, while having a greater control in the allocation of resources and facilitates time management. In fact, the virtual warehouse could not work alone, while barcode labeling and auto-conveyor assisted the virtual warehouse a lot in the stance of automation and computerization. They three are interrelated and the virtual warehouse is in the leading position among them, which means it is impo rtant in connecting different parts of a warehouse and make the WMS works. Although the above 3 special features has provide us convenience, efficiency and accuracy, we could not fully rely on a computerized system but to have a feature that could reduce our mistakes to the minimum, ideally, zero mistake. Thus the last feature we include in our WMS is cycle counting. Cycle counting reduces the need for the time-consuming and costly process of shutting down the manufacturing process in order to count inventory, which the inventory auditing procedure is carried out according to a continuous schedule. The result would be a more accurate calculation of stocks in the warehouse. To conclude, we think these four features are able to make a WMS that could control material movement efficiently and most possibly making the maximum profit.

Article Analysis Birth Control Review by Crystal Eastman...

To begin, Crystal Eastman first published her article in 1918. She produced the source for a large target audience. The article was originally published in a radical journal called Birth Control review. The source’s purpose was to inform women that, whether the law stated so or not, they had a choice as to whether or not to conceive a child. The purpose of the source is to demand that women take control of their bodies. â€Å"I would almost say, that the whole structure of the feminist’s dream of society rests upon the rapid extension of scientific knowledge about birth control.† (Eastman, Pg.510). Next, the original source is women, feminists, and most likely medical doctors. However, because it was posted in a magazine that was viewed as†¦show more content†¦To women physically strong and adventuresome it means freedom to enter all kinds of athletic contests and games, to compete with men in aviation, to drive racing cares... to enter dangerous trades, etc. To most of all it means economic freedom.† (Eastman, Pg.509). The topics she thinks most feminists will agree with is the stride toward political equality. However, she may create tension among herself and other feminists by suggesting that all women must know the joys of motherhood to be an ideal feminist. Some women may not want children. I feel as though Crystal Eastman is trying to persuade other feminists to come together and support each other and redefine feminism. Next, some of the underlying values present in modern women/ men may conflict with the values expressed in the source. Modern day, women m ostly have children because they want them. Some women do not want to have children modern day. The availability of birth control as well as other contraceptives may hinder the modern reader’s understandings into the past. Modern day, most women do not have sexual relations with their husband/boyfriend merely out of marital duty. A women can hand her husband or lover a bottle of lotion and instruct him to go view internet porn and â€Å"take matters into his own hands.† To conclude, this article does correspond with the other articles and content found in chapter eight of our textbook.
